Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has vowed to file defamation cases against Congress leader Pawan Khera, calling the allegations regarding his family's assets and financial dealings politically motivated lies.
NEW DELHI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a sharp counterattack on Sunday against Congress leader Pawan Khera following serious allegations regarding his family's financial dealings. The confrontation arose after Khera held a press conference questioning Sarma's wife, Rinki Bhuyan Sarma, concerning alleged foreign properties and financial links. In response to these charges, the Chief Minister categorically declared that he and his wife will file both criminal and civil defamation lawsuits against the Congress leader within the next 48 hours. Sarma characterized the accusations as malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated lies designed to mislead the public of Assam.
The tension escalated as Sarma took to the social media platform X, where he strongly rejected every allegation made by Khera. He described the press conference as a reflection of "deep frustration and panic" within the Congress party as Assam moves toward a potential historic mandate. Sarma asserted that such desperate attacks only expose the political party's sinking ground. Emphasizing his commitment to the rule of law, he stated he has complete faith in the judiciary. He warned that once the truth is established in a court of law, Pawan Khera will face the consequences of his reckless and defamatory statements, and the law will take its due course.
The source of this political storm traces back to the specific questions raised by Pawan Khera during his press conference. Khera launched a barrage of inquiries regarding the necessity of his wife holding three passports, questioning if she was a criminal or if Sarma himself possessed such documents. He further speculated on whether this was preparation for fleeing the country after an election loss. Beyond the passport issue, Khera made a specific and damaging claim regarding financial structures, alleging that Wyoming shell companies were being used to hide money. He questioned why Sarma would choose Wyoming, suggesting it is a well-known location where properties are hidden due to a lack of tax. Khera insisted that this information had been verified over two days before being made public.
Khera also demanded immediate action from central authorities, asking when Home Minister Amit Shah would establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter. He questioned when Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar would take cognizance of alleged hiding of information in the official affidavit. The Congress leader pressed for an explanation regarding how Sarma allegedly earned 52,000 crore rupees. Based on his claims, Khera argued that Sarma should not stay out of jail even for a day and that his nomination should be canceled. He further alleged that Rinki Bhuyan Sarma has a company in Wyoming, USA, where the member list includes the Chief Minister, his wife, and their son.
The allegations extended to the disclosure of property assets. Khera questioned why the Chief Minister did not disclose his wife's Dubai properties in the affidavit, raising doubts about transparency. He concluded his address by urging the central leadership to respond to the gravity of the situation, specifically calling out the Home Minister to set up an investigation. The conflict highlights a deepening political rift where the opposition is utilizing unverified financial data to challenge the ruling party's standing, while the government responds with aggressive legal threats to defend its integrity.
The immediate outcome of this exchange is the filing of a defamation suit that will likely dominate the political narrative in Assam. Given the Chief Minister's firm stance on holding the opposition leader accountable, the legal proceedings will serve as a critical test of the electoral integrity claims raised by Khera. If the allegations regarding the hidden assets and foreign properties are substantiated by the court, the political ramifications for the ruling party could be severe. Conversely, if the court validates Sarma's claims of fabrication, the Congress party faces a significant reputational crisis and a potential political defeat in the upcoming election. The situation remains fluid as the judiciary prepares to examine the evidence presented by both sides over the coming months.
