A former staffer and three other women have leveled serious sexual misconduct allegations against California congressional leader Rep. Eric Swalwell, casting a shadow over his bid for the governorship.
In a developing political storm, a former staffer of Rep. Eric Swalwell alleges the Democratic congressman raped her in 2024 while she was heavily intoxicated and left her bruised. Three other women have also come forward with various accounts of sexual misconduct, marking a severe challenge for the San Francisco Bay Area representative.
These sexual misconduct allegations emerged as Swalwell ascends in the polls for the California governor race. The congressman strongly denies the accusations, with his legal team sending cease-and-desist letters to the accusers and labeling the claims as fabricated attempts to interfere with his campaign ahead of the election.
The woman, now a former employee, described a harrowing incident that occurred in 2024 after she had ceased working in Swalwell's office. She told CNN that she pushed him off while shouting "no," but he did not stop. She stated this was the second time she experienced nonconsensual sexual contact while drunk, noting an earlier 2019 incident where she woke up naked and in physical pain during a hotel stay following heavy drinking, though she had no memory of the event.
Three additional women provided their own accounts of interacting with the congressman. One woman, who met Swalwell online over a shared interest in Democratic politics, described becoming extremely intoxicated in his hotel room with little memory of the event, noting that he had kissed and touched her without consent earlier in the evening. Another woman, social media creator Ally Sammarco, alleged receiving unsolicited nude messages from the congressman after reaching out to him on Twitter to discuss politics.
Eric Swalwell firmly rejected these accusations in a statement to CNN, calling them false and politically motivated. "These allegations are false and come on the eve of an election against the front-runner for governor," Swalwell said. He emphasized his nearly 20-year record as a prosecutor and congressman who has always protected women, promising to defend himself with facts and legal action if necessary.
Swalwell's attorney dispatched cease-and-desist letters to two of the women CNN interviewed, demanding retractions and threatening legal action. The letters argued that the women's claims were undermined by their continued voluntary relationship with the congressman, citing instances where the former staffer sought job references after the alleged incidents. The legal team also sent a letter to CNN denying any nonconsensual sexual relations with a woman or any staff member.
Despite the congressman's denials, CNN found corroboration for key elements of the women's stories. For the former staffer, a family member and friend confirmed she reported the 2024 assault shortly after it occurred. Text messages reviewed by CNN show her telling a friend, "I was sexually assaulted on Thursday," adding, "By Eric." She also shared medical records regarding STD and pregnancy testing following the alleged assault.
For the woman who met Swalwell online, family members and friends corroborated her account of being intoxicated in his hotel room. CNN reviewed messages between them, including a photo sent by Swalwell that matched footage of him during a CNN interview in her city.
The women described a consistent pattern where Swalwell, a married father of three, showed intense interest in their professional lives while they were in their twenties. This dynamic made them feel special, but the interactions escalated to increasingly sexual messages. Many women engaged due to his power, with inappropriate exchanges sometimes leading to unwanted physical contact or assault, often during episodes of heavy drinking.
Rumors regarding misbehavior by Swalwell had circulated on social media, broadcast by a group of progressive influencers. Most of the women initially contacted these influencers, noting that before this attention, they believed they were alone in their experiences. Three key influencers told CNN they were not paid by other campaigns and had not coordinated with them.
"I always felt like if I came forward, I was going to suffer the consequences because he was so powerful," the former staffer said, adding, "I've lived in fear every single day." She described the duality of her experience, noting that while she found his attention flattering, she also felt nervous due to his position as her boss.
While CNN also spoke to staff members who described Swalwell as a supportive boss and denied inappropriate interactions, several accusers stated that the congressman's actions left them confused, distraught, and scared. They decided to come forward only after realizing they were not alone in their experiences.
The California governor race now faces a pivotal moment as these serious accusations surface just as Swalwell gains momentum. With legal battles likely on the horizon and a growing list of accusers, the scandal could significantly alter the trajectory of the election. If the sexual misconduct allegations persist despite denials, the fallout may extend beyond the governor's race, potentially reshaping the Democratic party's landscape in California and forcing a re-evaluation of how political figures are held accountable. The outcome of these legal and public relations battles will likely define the remainder of the campaign season.
