Bulldozers and BJP flags appeared in Kolkata’s historic New Market following the election victory, sparking outrage and allegations of targeted political violence by the TMC.
Tensions escalated in Kolkata on Tuesday evening as bulldozers razed multiple structures within the city’s iconic New Market area. The incident occurred on May 5, 2026, just a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a sweeping victory in the West Bengal Assembly election 2026, ending the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) 15-year rule. Videos circulating online showed heavy machinery operating within the historic market, which has been home to traders from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds for generations.
Social media erupted with criticism as visuals emerged of people bearing BJP flags atop bulldozers chanting “Jai Shri Ram.” These images, accompanied by central armed forces personnel standing by, led the TMC to allege a coordinated attack. Derek O’Brien, a TMC Rajya Sabha MP, posted footage claiming the demolition was part of victory celebrations authorized with police permission. He specifically noted that the prime target appeared to be the TMC’s New Market union office, which was demolished during the operation.
The sight of panicked traders closing their shops underscored the gravity of the situation. The TMC launched a sharp rebuttal on social media, contrasting their pre-election slogan of “Bhoy out, Bharosa in” with the post-election reality of “Bharosa out, Bulldozer in.” They characterized the event as the arrival of BJP’s ‘Poriborton’ (change) delivered via heavy machinery rather than democratic mandate. This narrative framed the incident as a clear instance of Bulldozer raj, where state power was allegedly misused to intimidate political opponents.
In response to the growing controversy, Samik Bhattacharya, the BJP State president, addressed the situation by sharing messages with party workers since May 4. He explicitly instructed that no BJP worker or supporter should engage in vandalism or abuse of power. Bhattacharya stated that the party would not accept any post-poll violence and warned that anyone found using BJP flags to attack TMC offices would be removed from the party.
However, the violence was not isolated to Kolkata. In Murshidabad’s Jiaganj area, videos surfaced showing a group allegedly vandalizing a decades-old statue of Lenin. TMC MP Mahua Moitra criticized the incident, claiming BJP supporters replaced the statue with one of Shivaji. These events occurred amidst broader reports of vandalism and clashes across the state, where few party workers on both sides have been reported killed or injured. The capture and arson of TMC party offices have also surfaced in various locations, highlighting the volatile atmosphere following the decisive election outcome.
The immediate aftermath of the West Bengal Assembly election 2026 has been marked by significant unrest, with incidents ranging from property demolition in historic markets to the vandalism of political monuments. The reported post-poll violence, including the targeted razing of structures and alleged attacks on opposition assets, suggests a deeply polarized political environment. As allegations of coordinated action by ruling party supporters clash with denials from BJP leadership, the potential for sustained civil unrest remains high. The government will likely face intense scrutiny regarding its ability to maintain law and order and ensure a peaceful transition of power. If these incidents reflect a broader trend of intimidation rather than isolated clashes, long-term political stability in the state could be significantly undermined, requiring robust intervention to prevent further escalation between political factions.
