Days of suspense end as the BJP unveils its 27 candidates for the 2026 Assembly polls, highlighting key entries for Union Minister L. Murugan and others.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, a key partner in the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu, concluded a period of intense speculation on Friday, April 3, 2026, by releasing the names of all 27 candidates for the upcoming Assembly election. This comprehensive BJP candidate list confirms the party's strategy for the 2026 polls, with high-profile leaders entering the fray in contested segments across the state.
The announcement confirmed long-standing expectations regarding senior leadership entries. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan has officially entered the electoral contest from the Avanashi (Reserved) Assembly segment. This marks a shift from his previous experience in the region, where he unsuccessfully contested the Dharapuram (Reserved) seat during the prior Assembly polls. Meanwhile, BJP State president Nainar Nagenthran will contest from the Sattur Assembly segment in Virudhunagar district, moving away from his traditional home turf of Tirunelveli. Nagenthran brings significant electoral experience to the new segment, having contested the Tirunelveli constituency five times in the past and securing victory three times-twice on an AIADMK ticket and once as a BJP nominee.
High-profile figures are also securing their positions on the ticket. Former BJP State president and former Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan is contesting from the Mylapore Assembly segment in Chennai. This represents her fourth time entering the fray in a State Assembly election. Incumbent MLA Vanathi Srinivasan, the national president of the BJP Mahila Morcha, will contest from Coimbatore North. She previously defeated Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president Kamal Haasan by a narrow margin while holding the Coimbatore South seat. Additionally, S. Vijayadharani, who formerly represented the Congress party before defecting to the BJP, has been assigned the ticket for Vilavancode, a constituency she previously won three times.
The expanded list includes a diverse array of candidates from various districts. M. Rajasimha Mahindra is fielded from Avadi, while Nagesh Kumar will contest from Thalli. C. Elumalai represents the BJP in Tiruvannamalai, and S.D. Premkumar is set for Rasipuram (Reserved). The list further includes Krithika Shivkumar from Modakurichi, Bhojarajan from Udhagamandalam, S. Thangaraj from Tiruppur (South), Govi. Chandru from Tiruvarur, and M. Muruganandam from Thanjavur. In the southern districts, C. Udhayakumar will contest from Gandharvakottai (Reserved), N. Ramachandran from Pudukottai, and Kavitha Srikanth, the state president of the BJP's women's wing, from Aranthangi.
Other notable entries include K.C. Thirumaran of the South Indian Forward Bloc, contesting from Tirupattur, and Pon. V. Balaganapathy, who will run for Manamadurai (Reserved). The slate also features Raama Sreenivasan in Madurai South, GBS K. Nagendran from Ramanathapuram, Ananthan Ayyaswamy from Vasudevanallur (Reserved), and K.R.M. Radhakrishnan from Tiruchendur. S.P. Balakrishnan is contesting from Radhapuram, while incumbent MLA M.R. Gandhi and T. Sivakumar will run from Nagercoil and Colachel, respectively. P. Ramesh rounds out the list from Padmanabhapuram.
A significant development in the release of the BJP candidate list is the omission of former BJP State president K. Annamalai. Reports indicate that following a recent constituency allocation exercise by the AIADMK, the alliance partner did not identify any seat as "favourable" for him. Despite recent speculation suggesting a potential constituency swap to accommodate Annamalai, the final decision did not include him.
Addressing his absence in a post on X, Annamalai emphasized his continued commitment to the alliance. "I, as a Karyakarta, will stand shoulder to shoulder and campaign for all our winning BJP and other NDA candidates, with the aim of the NDA winning 210 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections." His statement underscores the unified front the alliance hopes to present despite the internal adjustments in candidate selection. The strategic focus remains on the broader goal of securing a majority for the NDA coalition in the upcoming Assembly polls.
With the candidate list finalized, the political machinery in Tamil Nadu is shifting from speculation to active campaigning. The inclusion of experienced leaders like L. Murugan and Tamilisai Soundararajan signals a push for high-profile visibility in key constituencies. The exclusion of Annamalai, while a point of discussion, has been met with a declaration of continued support for the broader alliance strategy. As the parties gear up for the election, the NDA's target of 210 seats remains the central metric for success. The coming weeks will likely see intensified campaigning, particularly in the reserved seats and the southern districts where the new slate of candidates is contesting. The alliance's ability to leverage the experience of incumbents like Vanathi Srinivasan and the popularity of Union Ministers like Murugan will be critical in determining the electoral outcome in Tamil Nadu.
