A charter plane crashed near a remote radar site in western Alaska, killing all 8 people on board, according to federal aviation and military officials. The fatal incident occurred around 12:15 p.m. on Thursday when the aircraft, a Cessna 441, departed Anchorage and was en route to Cape Newenham, located approximately 450 miles southwest.
Clint Johnson, the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) Alaska region chief, confirmed that two pilots and six passengers were on board the charter flight operated by Security Aviation. Alaskan Command identified the aircraft as a civilian-contracted flight carrying eight personnel. Search-and-rescue crews subsequently confirmed there were no survivors from the tragedy.
The plane went down at Cape Newenham Airport, an Air Force airstrip that provides essential access to the Long Range Radar Site. While the exact cause of the crash remains unknown, the FAA and NTSB have announced they will investigate the incident, with the NTSB taking the lead. Only military and approved charter flights are permitted to land at the Cape Newenham facility, underscoring the restricted nature of this remote location.
The geography of the landing zone presents significant challenges. The gravel runway is nearly 4,000 feet long and is located on the slope of a mountain standing more than 2,300 feet high. According to FAA maps, high terrain is reported on both sides and at the south end of the runway. This topography can make aborting a landing “improbable” after a certain point, highlighting the risks associated with operating in such demanding environments.
“This is a devastating loss for our military family and the communities we serve,” said US Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert Davis. “These individuals were dedicated professionals carrying out a vital mission in a demanding environment.”
The identities of the passengers and crew will be released only after their next of kin have been notified, the command stated. In the wake of the disaster, officials have focused on providing assistance to those left behind. “Our absolute priority right now is providing unwavering support to their families, friends, and teammates during this devastating time,” Davis said. “We are profoundly grateful for the swift and tireless response of our search and recovery professionals.”
Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski expressed her condolences in a statement on X, noting her familiarity with the airline involved. “I’ve traveled extensively with Security Aviation throughout Alaska, and have met many of their experienced pilots,” Murkowski wrote. She also appreciated the response efforts, stating, “I appreciate the U.S. Coast Guard, NTSB, Alaska State Troopers, and the Rescue Coordination Center for responding to the site. Alaska is praying for those on board, their loved ones, and the team at Security Aviation.”

On its website, Security Aviation describes its “fleet of Cessna Conquests” as being “ideally suited for flights in Alaska with challenging weather and airport environments.”
The aircraft involved in this tragedy is a twin-engine, turbo-prop model that is pressurized and seats up to nine passengers. According to the company, these planes have the ability to cruise at 330 mph at 28,000 feet, capabilities designed to handle the rigorous demands of Alaskan aviation.
