TVK chief C. Joseph Vijay has unveiled a full slate of 234 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly election 2026, with the actor set to contest from two key constituencies.
Tamil Nadu witnessed a historic political shift on Sunday, March 29, 2026, as TVK president C. Joseph Vijay officially announced his party's full roster for the upcoming Assembly elections. The actor turned politician is set to make his C. Joseph Vijay debut by contesting from two distinct constituencies: Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchi East. Alongside his own candidacy, the TVK leadership released a complete TVK candidates list covering all 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu and 30 seats in Puducherry for the Tamil Nadu Assembly election 2026.
The announcement drew significant attention as Vijay named a diverse array of contestants, many of whom are former rivals from the AIADMK and DMK. The strategy appears designed to broaden the party's appeal by leveraging established names from within Tamil Nadu's political landscape. K.A. Sengottaiyan, a nine-time former AIADMK MLA who recently joined TVK, will contest from his home turf of Gobichettipalayam. Similarly, former Tiruppur MP V. Sathyabama, a supporter of Vijay, is running from Tiruppur North, while former Agriculture Minister Ku.Pa. Krishnan will contest from Lalgudi.
In Chennai, the political battlegrounds are particularly intense. In Perambur, Vijay faces incumbent DMK MLA R.D. Shekar, while the AIADMK has allocated the seat to Anbumani's PMK. Vijay's own general secretary, 'Bussy' N. Anand, is contesting from T. Nagar against DMK's Raja Anbazhagan and AIADMK's B. Sathyanarayanan. The race in Villivakkam features a three-way contest involving TVK's Aadhav Arjuna, the son of DMK MLA M.K. Mohan, and AIADMK's former Chennai Central MP S.R. Vijayakumar.
The party's internal dynamics were further highlighted by the participation of new faces and long-serving allies. D. Selvam, former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee general secretary, joined TVK just two days prior to the announcement and is now contesting against Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni. In Kolathur, former MLA V.S. Babu will face CM M.K. Stalin, who is seeking a fourth term. Additionally, joint general secretary C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar will contest from Thirupparankundram, while party treasurer P. Venkataramanan takes on the race from Mylapore.
The announcement was not without its challenges, as a section of TVK workers from the K.V. Kuppam segment protested the party's decision. These demonstrators demanded the seat be allocated to a party worker named Prabhu and blocked the arterial Uthamar Gandhi Salai in Nungambakkam, where Vijay was addressing the crowd. Police intervention was required to clear the obstruction before the event concluded. On a more emotional note, R. Sabarinathan, contesting from Virugambakkam, broke down in tears of joy upon hearing his name announced. Sabarinathan, whose father Rajendran has worked with Vijay for over two decades, was visibly moved and comforted by the party chief.
The TVK's aggressive entry into the Tamil Nadu Assembly election 2026 signals a major realignment in the state's political terrain. By fielding former high-ranking officials from opposing parties and maintaining a strong presence in key Chennai constituencies, the party is positioning itself as a formidable third force. The inclusion of 23 women candidates in the roster underscores a commitment to diversifying the political landscape. As the election month approaches, the success of these new alliances will likely determine the future power dynamics in the state, potentially forcing established parties to reconsider their strategies in response to this fresh challenge.
