Israeli forces launch deadly strikes in Tyre and southern Lebanon, forcing mass evacuations and complicating US-brokered ceasefire efforts amid escalating regional tensions.
The Israeli military has carried out widespread air and artillery strikes across southern Lebanon, directly defying explicit warnings from Iran to cease operations in the region. This escalation marks a significant deterioration in the fragile security situation, resulting in multiple casualties and forcing hundreds of civilians to flee their homes under urgent evacuation orders issued by Israeli forces.
The violence erupted shortly after a period of paused hostilities, following an Israeli strike on Beirut that targeted the Iranian-backed armed group Hezbollah, which triggered the first exchange of fire since a ceasefire was brokered in April. Despite Iranian threats to hit Israel if attacks continued, Israel vowed to maintain its campaign. The Lebanese health ministry reported that eight people were killed in Tyre, with the death toll in southern Lebanon rising to at least 13 by Tuesday, according to Lebanese media. The Israeli military issued a new evacuation order for residents of Tyre, including its Christian quarter for the first time, directing them to move beyond the Zahrani River, approximately 30km north.
Roads leading out of Tyre became congested as residents fled with mattresses and bags tied to their vehicles. Among them was Elias Barbour, who expressed confusion and fear to AFP, asking, "What have we done wrong? What are we supposed to do?" Conversely, Mohammed Mustafa, heading to Sidon with his daughter, dismissed the evacuation orders as a lie intended to scare the population, claiming no Hezbollah presence in his area. The Israeli military posted the evacuation directive on social media minutes after reports of air strikes hit buildings in Tyre’s eastern al-Massaken al-Shaabiya area. The Lebanese health ministry stated that 32 others were injured, though figures remain provisional as rescue workers continue to search through rubble.
Further casualties were reported in the afternoon, with two Syrian nationals killed in Israeli strikes in the villages of Ansariyeh and Aadloun, located on the coastal highway north of Tyre. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the specific casualties in these villages but confirmed via its chief of staff, Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, that forces continue to operate in southern Lebanon to dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure. "Iran's attempt to dictate new rules and alter the reality will fail. We will continue to operate and deepen the damage inflicted on the Hezbollah terrorist organisation while defending the communities of northern Israel," Gen Zamir told military commanders.
In a separate incident, the Israeli military reported that troops in the Ramim Ridge area of the Galilee shot dead a "terrorist" who crossed from Lebanon and opened fire. Meanwhile, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for launching rockets at a new Israeli military site in Maroun al-Ras and targeting troops in Qantara and Zawtar al-Sharqiyeh with drones.
This renewed conflict significantly complicates President Donald Trump’s efforts to strike a deal ending the war between the US, Israel, and Iran. The violence resumed on 2 March when Hezbollah launched rockets in retaliation for an Israeli strike that killed Iran's supreme leader, leading to a massive Israeli bombing campaign and invasion of southern Lebanon. Since then, Lebanon’s health ministry reports at least 3,666 dead, while Israeli authorities confirm 30 soldiers and four civilians killed. The UN states that almost one million people in Lebanon-a fifth of the population-remain displaced, with 1.4 million requiring humanitarian aid. Although the US brokered a ceasefire on 16 April following an Israeli strike in Beirut’s Dahije district, the conflict has persisted, with both sides continuing to exchange fire and issue new directives that deepen the humanitarian crisis and regional instability.
